Merri-bek begins Moonee Ponds Creek naturalisation works

Merri-bek City Council has commenced construction on the Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek Project, transforming the concrete channel into a naturalised waterway.

The project will replace existing concrete infrastructure with natural creek beds, native vegetation, and wildlife habitat areas. Works are underway along sections of the creek corridor within the Merri-bek municipality, with completion expected over multiple phases.

The naturalisation involves removing concrete channelling, reshaping creek banks, and establishing riparian vegetation zones. Council has allocated funding through its capital works program, supported by state government grants for waterway restoration.

For developers, this creates opportunities around enhanced creek frontages and improved environmental amenity in adjacent residential and mixed-use zones. Properties backing onto the creek corridor may see increased development potential as the waterway transitions from industrial infrastructure to green open space.

The project aligns with council's planning policies favouring sustainable development and water sensitive urban design principles in creek-adjacent developments.
